چکیده

Haptics research has begun implementing haptic feedback in tasks of great precision and skill, such as robotic surgery. Haptic displays can represent task environments with arbitrary scaling. Fitts’ Law suggests differences in the scale of a workspace rendered on a visual display and in a haptic display should not affect performance of those tasks. However, interactions of great precision and skill may require understanding and verifying the influence of perceiving an environment when the visual and haptic displays represent those environments with differing scales. This experiment measured the influence that mismatched haptic and visual display scalings had on movement times in. Each of five treatments used different scales in the visual and the haptic displays. A Friedman rank test showed a significant difference across all treatments. A post hoc pairwise comparison showed a nearly significant difference between two treatments. These findings suggest the need for further study using more participants and parametric statistics to measure the magnitude of the possible influences.

Applying Fitts’ Law in a Mobile and Pervasive Computing Environment

The computing environment of the future will be mobile and pervasive, involving a paradigm shift away from the desktop. Inspired by the beginnings of this shift, from desktop to mobile and pervasive computing, this project set out to look at whether mobile and pervasive computers were different to desktop computers. Specifically, its original aim was to investigate the practice of simply scalin...

Optimizing the Surgeon-Robot Interface: The Effect of Index of Difficulty and Control-Display Gain on Movement Time

Robotic surgery technology has made significant advances recently in a wide range of clinical applications. Despite the documented benefits of robotic-assisted surgery, the main limitation is that procedures take more time than traditional manual techniques. Human factors engineering will play a pivotal role in designing a surgeon-robot interface that can optimize the surgeon’s performance to m...

Evaluation of a modified Fitts law BCI target acquisition task in able and motor disabled individuals

A brain–computer interface (BCI) is a communication system that takes recorded brain signals and translates them into real-time actions, in this case movement of a cursor on a computer screen. This work applied Fitts’ law to the evaluation of performance on a target acquisition task during sensorimotor rhythm-based BCI training. Fitts’ law, which has been used as a predictor of movement time in...

Exploring Fitts’ Law in Web Browsing

As one of the most influential laws in human-computer interaction for decades, Fitts’ law quantitatively models human pointing behaviors. However, the majority of Fitts’ law experiments have been conducted in a laboratory environment, which lends doubt to its validity in a real-world GUI (Graphical User Interface) context. This paper attempts to stresstest Fitts’ law in the “wild”, namely, unde...

Evaluation of a Collaborative Movement Task in a Distributed Three-dimensional Virtual Environment

A task designed to estimate the impact of communication channel performance on individual and collaborative human performance in distributed, shared, virtual environments was evaluated. The ‘Fitts-like’ task required participants to press buttons as fast as they could in a three-dimensional virtual workspace. In addition, in the collaborative task the 2 participants were required to press the b...
